The Thresholds of Knowledge exhibition which took place at UNISA Art Gallery last month featured edgy, interesting and multidimensional artworks by Master’s and Doctoral students from the University of South Africa (UNISA) Department of Art and Music submitted as part of fulfilling course and higher qualification requirements.

The students who took part included Sango Filita, Wadzanai Tirimboyi, Bongani Ntombela, Karabo Aphane and Reinhard Sonntag. Each of their works was distinct and thought-provocative and demonstrated the growing popularity of art-based higher education qualifications which have public facing components.

Curated by Prof. Nombeko Mpako, the exhibition showcased diverse artistic voices which all sought to grapple with issues from migration, identity, memory, politics and much more. The exhibition had in it aspects such as film, installation, sculpture and even a performance art component which proved a hit with the audiences who attended.
*The Thresholds of Knowledge – A Masters & Doctoral Exhibition was on from 20 September to 17 October 2025 at the UNISA Art Gallery in Pretoria.
