The historic drama Shaka iLembe claimed a staggering 12 SAFTAs this past weekend, setting a new record as the most awarded series in the event’s history. Its standout triumph was Thembinkosi Mthembu’s Best Actor win for his portrayal of King Dingiswayo. Mthembu faced stiff competition, primarily from himself, as his dual roles included Bonga in Adulting alongside Nhlanhla Kunene’s Tsiki Tsiki in the Showmax Original.

This SAFTA victory was a career-defining moment for Mthembu, who also held the most nominations of any actor this year with four nods. These culminated in his first-ever SAFTA win, an accolade that follows a whirlwind year with awards like Hunk of the Year at the Feather Awards, the People’s Choice Award at GQ’s Men of the Year, and Best Actor at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film and TV Awards—all for Shaka iLembe. His public profile has surged, with tabloids touting headlines like, “Actor Thembinkosi Drives Women Wild!”

On whether he anticipated his SAFTA triumph, Mthembu was initially playful, suggesting any of his nominations might take the prize. But he quickly grew reflective.

“It’s definitely Dingiswayo in Shaka iLembe,” he admitted.

“That character brought me to a place I never expected to reach as a performer. It’s the first time I felt such an intense connection, breaking past any previous limits.”

Cracking into not just one but four SAFTA nominations marked a significant breakthrough for him.

“I’m truly happy. Even without past nominations, I kept pushing every year—not for awards but to improve my craft.”

Winning, however, carried deeper meaning.

“Recognition from the NFVF for the SAFTAs is huge for me. They’ve acknowledged the dedication I poured into Dingiswayo, from the time invested to the passion embedded in every scene. I feel blessed.”

While quick to express gratitude, Mthembu didn’t shy away from crediting his own resolve:

“I thank myself for pushing through.”

He extended thanks to his family and colleagues, including the talented stunt team led by Kabelo Chalatsane Mokoena, who helped shape Dingiswayo’s physicality, and co-star Mondli Makhoba, who portrayed Ngomane.

Shaka iLembe not only swept the SAFTAs but also shattered records on DStv, drawing over four million viewers and becoming the most Googled South African show last year. When asked about the series’ impact, Mthembu credits its roots.

“I love that it was done in our language. It’s a story honouring our past and our ancestors—especially the Zulu nation. It’s a tribute, especially with the blessings of Bab’ Zulu and the support of King Misuzulu. Our children will grow up with this show, learning about Shaka Zulu through a story that speaks to them.”

The success of both Shaka iLembe and Outlaws, with eight SAFTA awards of its own, reflects the dedication of Mthembu and his fellow actors.

“Recognition from the NFVF and SAFTAs validates our hard work. We strive to enrich our industry and bring meaningful stories into South African homes.”
